Hutchison: Culver City Mission Revival

For this historic Mission Revival home in Culver City, the clients were eager to optimize the functionality of their rear yard, including adding an ADU to the property.  Because of code restrictions, the existing garage building could not be relocated. Instead, an ADU unit, built laterally across the rear of the yard, incorporates the existing garage, creating an L-shaped backdrop for a new courtyard patio. The new structure reflects the home’s Mission Revival style. and the cozy paved patio comes alive with a colorful tiled fountain.  Inside the ADU, the patio’s charm carries through in the vibrantly tiled floor, the brightly tiled bathroom, and in a small kitchenette whose blue-and-white tile backsplash dances across a polished mahogany counter.  A structural arch to the left of the ADU entrance leads to a secluded side yard patio, allowing the ADU occupants a bit of privacy from the main house.  The project transformed the rear yard from a utility space dominated by a bland garage into a welcoming set piece full of character and charisma.
